“Would love to return one day”

We had a family reunion for my Dad’s 70th birthday. Lovely cottages - Swallow Barn - has a lovely picture view out towards the Black Mountain ridge. The presentation of the cottages was excellent - all down to the smallest detail. Kitchen really well equipped.

The children loved the barn where they could play table tennis, pool and table football. We were helped by great dry and sunny winter weather - lovely countryside to explore. Even if it was bad weather, then it would be a lovely place to get away from the pressures of work and read. Great sofas to fall into, in front of huge open fires.

Specifically Recommend:

The detail - lovely presented towels wrapped in ribbon.

Be Aware:

Only downside was no bath - but then there is no room for a bath, and the shower is excellent.

Local Gems:

The local pub in Micheal Esclay has really good food

Summary:

“A fabulous place for a family holiday for all ages”

Just what we were looking for for a family 70th birthday celebration week-end, staying in The Granary and Swallow Barn. The buildings are sensitive conversions of ancient farm buildings, beautifully cupboarded and fitted out in oak by Ken. Spacious and beautifully equipped, very comfortable beds. Every detail considered.

Ideal for ALL ages - cot and high chair - and an aged dog. Located in beautiful countryside at the foot of the Black Mountains - sunny frosty days ideal for walking. LOTS for children to do. The four aged 10-7 much enjoyed the warmth and range of activities in the playbarn.

Very warm welcome from Ruth and Ken Watkins. A bottle of wine and basic supplies in-situ and a limitless supply of logs. Spring in the air - lots of snowdrops catkins in the hedgerows, and frog spawn in ponds.

Specifically Recommend:

The History of Cresswell Craswall by Ruth Watkins is very well worth a read, not only for the history of the farm and its buildings, but also of the district.

Lots of OS maps also provided.

Local Gems:

Pandy Inn, Dorstone did a very good lunch for 17 with advance notice.

Well-stocked shop at Longtown.

Fascinating local churches eg Craswall, St Margarets, Michaelchurch Escley.

Summary:

“A great place for a family gathering”

We had a wonderful family gathering here, celebrating my father’s 70th Birthday. The Barn conversions are beautifully executed and wonderfully furnished and equipped. The beds are comfortable and there are woodburning stoves in the living rooms in addition to central heating (and underfloor heating).

Had the weather been poor, everyone would have been happy staying indoors in the warm and comfort and the children were very happy in the Games Room. We were lucky with the weather though and enjoyed the fantastic view from the cottages over the Black Mountains and also had a really good walk along the nearest ridge. The children still had energy for the trampoline.

I have never stayed in rented accommodation with such attention to detail in terms of comfort and equipment, including the provision of towel bundles tied with ribbon, tea, coffee and biscuits on arrival and even hot water bottles.

Specifically Recommend:

Great for family gatherings or two or three families meeting up.

Local Gems:

We had a great walk along the Cats Back ridge.

We also had a good meal at the Pandy Inn (20 mins’ drive).

Hay on Wye is worth a visit for independent shops and books.

“Stunning barns, amazing views and fabulous hosts!”

What can I say, this is the second time for us at Dukes Farm and it is just simply amazing. The location is breathtaking, the barns are gorgeous and the hosts (Ruth and Ken) are absolutely lovely!

We had three dogs with us and they bounded around and wore themselves out with the fabulous walks. The walk along the Cats Back to the Black Hill is an absolute must on a clear day, the views are just to die for.

The barns are beautifully done, Ken’s skill with the oak is not to be outdone by Ruth’s eye for detail with just everything thought of for an idyllic stay. The massive woodburners are thoughtfully lit for your arrival and there is always a ready supply of wood to keep you warm. The cookies are also naughty but very nice!!!!

It is all too easy just to stay cocooned in the barns but there is just so much to do and see. Even after two visits I feel as though we have barely scratched the surface. Hay on Wye is a must, and we even managed to get to Ludlow (only about an hour’s drive away and worth every second!).

I cannot recommend Dukes Farm enough. It will never disappoint you. If you have dogs, it’s perfect. If you want to celebrate something, it’s perfect. If you want to get away with friends, it’s perfect. If you want a romantic escape, it’s perfect. Put quite simply, it is just perfect.

Specifically Recommend:

The Goose Cotts if you want that romantic getaway.

The walk along the Cats Back.

A visit to Hay and Ludlow. The views.

“The best views in Herefordshire”

This is the second time we have stayed at Swallow Barn, one of the cottages at Dukes Farm. The barn has plenty of room for eight people and is the perfect place for our family get-togethers. The views from the terrace are simply stunning, looking down over the small vineyard, across the fields of sheep and across to the Brecon Beacons. There is a beautiful little garden to enjoy too, and plenty of outdoor eating space.

Inside, the owners have thought of everything guests might need. The kitchen is really well-equipped and there is a large dining table. A huge TV with DVD player sits in the large sitting room and there is a great games room across the yard with every game that both children and adults could possibly need. The beds are very comfy and towels are tied up with ribbon as a lovely touch. One of our party was disabled, and the barn was perfect for her wheelchair, as was the wet room attached to her bedroom.

Ken and Ruth could not be more delightful and helpful, and live next door so they are always on hand.

There are wonderful walks everywhere nearby and you can even walk around the farm without having to get in the car.

Specifically Recommend:

Every bit of it!

Summary:

“What a perfect location to get away from it all!”

My wife and i were celebrating our 40th anniversary and what better way to celebrate than to spend a long weekend away with our immediate family in an idyllic location in the Wye valley with magnificent views of the Black Mountains.

Friends of ours had previously stayed at Dukes Farm and recommended it to us, and it certainly lived up to expectations! Ruth and Ken Watkins welcomed us on arrival and we quickly settled in to the beautiful Swallow Barn. The amenities are first class and each family had separate bathrooms! We settled in to a lovely room on the ground floor with a view out of the window to die for, the rest of the clan dispersed to spacious rooms upstairs, and then we made plans to maximize our stay.

There is lots to do at the farm with walks into the hills and a pub about one mile down the lane. We found the games room at the farm and a family competition ensued consisting of table tennis pool and table football and darts - I finished last! My Grandson loved the outdoor trampoline and it was with great reluctance that we bade farewell but we will return very soon!

Specifically Recommend:

I would recommend Dukes Farm to anyone who enjoys a real away-from-it-all break where you can either walk the hills or just relax and unwind and drink in the scenery - a perfect way to re-charge the batteries!!

Local Gems:

Patrisio Church in the Black Mountains

Several excellent pubs

A drive into Hay-on-Wye is also a must, as is a trip to Abergavenny to St Mary’s church to see one of the best Jesse trees in the country.

En Route:

We stopped in Hereford on the way down and visited the magnificent Cathedral to see the Mappa Mundi, the oldest map of the world extant in Britain.

The chained library is also fascinating

Summary:

“Superb accommodation in beautiful surroundings”

I booked Dukes Farm (all three properties) for a family get-together to celebrate my Dad’s 60th birthday. Being a large party (my parents, five siblings plus their spouses and children, not to mention the dogs), who live all over the UK, I was delighted when I came across Ruth and Ken’s website for Dukes Farm - I had found somewhere that could accommodate all of us!

When I booked it I thought, ’’this seems perfect’’ and when we arrived I thought, ’’This IS perfect!’’ We were welcomed by Ruth who made us feel at home straight away.

All three properties were absolutely delightful, very comfortable, homely and EXTREMELY well equipped. Despite being a large party, there was plenty of space for everyone. Beds were very comfortable and all properties were very clean.

In the evenings we congregated in Swallow Barn, enjoying family meals, followed by games and a glass of wine (or two!) The weather whilst there wasn’t great, but there was still plenty to keep us all entertained, from DVDs, board games, table tennis, pool table, table football, books etc. We made the most of any dry weather by having a barbeque - charcoal etc was provided. The children (and big kids like myself) loved the trampoline! As for the boys, they loved making a fire in the fire pit!

The surrounding countryside is beautiful. If you enjoy walking, you’ll be spoilt for choice. I enjoyed going running a few times, and the locals were always friendly and said hello. There is also plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. In the Boot Room there are plenty of leaflets detailing activities to suit all tastes.

Specifically Recommend:

Whether you’re looking for a romantic break, quality family time or fun and games with good friends, Dukes Farm has it all!

I will definitely be recommending it to everyone I know. Thank you Ruth and Ken for making our holiday perfect.

The properties are beautiful, have obviously been lovingly and thoughtfully restored and are in a relaxing and very rural location.

“Comfortable accommodation in a peaceful setting”

We stayed in Goose Cottage which was very comfortable with everything you could wish for provided, including a dishwasher and washing machine. There is a wood burning stove which was lit and very welcoming on our arrival and we were kept well stocked up with kindling and logs throughout our stay.

Ruth and Ken are excellent hosts, on hand when needed but never intrusive. The setting is quiet and at first felt a little remote but we soon became used to that.

Wonderful scenery, excellent for walkers and convenient for visits to Hay-on-Wye and Hereford. We would certainly stay there again.

“Great location, comfortable property with attention to detail and we enjoyed it for large family get-together.”

We had a family get-together to celebrate my parents-in-law 50th wedding anniversary and booked two of the properties at Dukes Farm - Swallow Barn and Goose Cotts.

Both were exactly what we needed - spacious, clean and had character. In addition, Swallow Barn had the most incredible views over open farmland and the Black Mountains (Cats Back). Another family were at the adjoining cottage. We did share some of the same open space but it was not a problem at all as the site is so big and well set out.

We have stayed at many cottages in the UK but I would say that the welcome here was the best we have ever had. It was obvious that Ruth really did want everyone to have a good time and to be well rested as the beds and bedding were particularly good.

Having looked back at the website it is clear the photos were taken a little while ago, but with 12 of us and two dogs we did not want a place where you had to worry about white carpets etc! If you do stay there the only thing I would consider is that there is no mobile phone coverage (but there is a landline you can use) and the nearest shops are some way away so worth bringing sufficient provisions if like us you wanted to base the whole stay around the farm.

Specifically Recommend:

Ideal for large family get-together, although I would also consider booking one of the properties on its own

The walk up to Cats Back is worth it.

Summary:

“Top quality accommodation in a picturesque rural setting”

The owners of Dukes Farm (Ken and Ruth) have clearly worked hard to make their cottages outstanding. They’ve been lovingly converted from the farm buildings they once were (anyone into carpentry and history will be in their element), and manage to be cosy and spacious at the same time.

The cottages are really well equipped and spotlessly clean. The owners appear to have thought of everything (maps, torches, basic cooking supplies, wellies, iPod docking stations etc. etc.).

There are plenty of toys, games and DVDs to keep children amused as well as a separate heated games room and a sunken trampoline in the garden.

Ken and Ruth are also telepathic, as the book I forgot to bring was sitting on the bookshelf in our bedroom. Bottled water and fresh milk in all of the fridges, and a lovely cake left for us in the Swallow Barn, were nice touches.

The large Swallow Barn is suitable for anyone with mobility issues, but not the Goose Cotts or the Granary. You may spot Ken and Ruth working hard around the place and they’re always available for emergencies (or non-emergencies, such as finding somewhere for us to eat on a Sunday night), but otherwise you’ll feel like you have the place to yourselves.

Everyone in our party thought Dukes Farm was excellent value and the perfect location for a reunion. We plan to go back as a twosome ASAP, so leave us some availability please.

Specifically Recommend:

Things we really liked.....

The peace and quiet, the beautiful rural location, the high quality bedding

The sound of the spring running under the Goose Cotts, the underfloor heating in the shower rooms

Ruth’s history of the farm and the surrounding area, the views of the Cats Back from the Swallow Barn

And last, but not least, the wood stoves (with a well-stocked supply of wood outside the front door) in which the men could make fire.

Be Aware:

This a very rural location and not a chocolate box village setting, so you’ll need to get out your walking boots (or the car) to get to a pub (not far - about one and a half miles).

Local Gems:

Pubs - The Bridge Inn at Michaelchurch Escley - lovely setting, friendly atmosphere, and...
The Crown Inn at Longtown - very decent pub food and service, food served on Sunday evenings.

Hay Cinema Bookshop in Hay-on-Wye - loads of books, some good bargains.

Take a walk up the Cats Back if you’re feeling reasonably fit, or a nice gentle stroll around the lanes in Craswall if you’re not.

“A stress-free, idyllic, and exciting place to visit.”

This was a perfect place to get away and relax with a big group of friends. The location was fabulous with stunning view out of the windows of the property (Black Hill), and adventurous walks on the door step. There was a proper pub down the road which did excellent local food and beer.

As for the cottage itself, it was very comfortable and kitted out to a very high spec. The owners (very welcoming and helpful) had thought of everything. The best part was that the beds were extremely comfortable!

Also, we were able to be as noisy as we wanted without worrying about other guests, and the owners were welcoming of fun. An extra bonus was the huge trampoline which entertained us big kids.

Specifically Recommend:

“If you want to get away from it all, look no further...”

Dukes Farm is a real home-from-home with high quality accommodation, wonderfully peaceful surroundings and lovely hosts.

Pets are made welcome (though be aware that the farm has sheep grazing for several months of the year) and there are nice touches such as fresh milk on arrival and a pack of luxury biscuits.

There is also a lovely wood burner to keep you toasty. It is the ideal place if you want to get away from it all.

“Dukes Farm delivers everything you want from a countryside holiday and more!!”

Dukes Farm is the perfect country retreat. A big group of us visited in January and were simply blown away by the hospitality of Ken and Ruth who own this remarkable property. Set in the most beautiful location just below the black hill on the Brecon Beacons the view around the cottages is just breathtaking. Even in January we had sunshine every morning and sat outside with our coffee to take in the scenery.

We are a young, loud and creative group of people who had come away to enjoy each other’s company and have a laugh. With all three cottages booked we had all the space we needed to hang out as one big group and have some down time on our own to relax and read if we wanted to.

All the cottages were equipped with everything you could possibly need and more. The log burners and underfloor heating kept the place feeling warm and cosy the whole time and the children were never bored with all the games, toys, DVDs and outdoor areas for them to explore!! I enjoyed cooking four big meals for over 15 people in the Swallow Barn kitchen even though I normally struggle to cook in other people’s kitchens. We spent most of our time walking around the local area and relaxing but if you do want to go further the lovely town of Hay on Wye is just a twenty minute drive away.

We are going to book again next year and cannot wait.

“Perfect, well priced, am already planning to return.”

Absolutely loved staying at Dukes Farm. You get a lovely warm welcome from Ken and Ruth. It is in the middle of no-where which was great. They supply everything - kids’ toys, books, games, and a brilliantly stocked kitchen. There is a games room with snooker table and ping pong. We had so much fun. It is in the foot hills of the beautiful Black Mountains, which we managed to walk up one of with the kids!

The views are amazing, there is a sunken trampoline also to keep the kids busy. They supply towels all beautifully wrapped in ribbon. There is a little cubby hole to get Wi-Fi if you need it. No ’phone reception at the cottages which was nice to get a break. They are very eco-aware. Lovely big burners and more wood than you could ever use. Oh and under floor heating was a nice extra touch.

So we had a brilliant time and am already planning two trips back!

Summary:

“Quiet comfortable retreat with spectacular location and character.”

We rented all three cottages so we could have ourselves, children and grandchildren together. It could not have been better for us.

The location is very beautiful, the cottages are all full of character and extremely well equipped. The views are superb. Sheenagh was particularly delighted by her view from her bedroom window.

At the bird feeders we saw species we had not seen before, which is always a delight.

Swallow Barn is particularly big, and Ruth and Ken kindly added an extra table and chairs so that the whole family could eat together, there was plenty of room for this.

Overall very comfortable.

Specifically Recommend:

The character of all three properties are a delight.

The views, particularly from the picture window in Swallow Barn are fabulous.

The walk up the nearby ridge is fantastic with lovely views, though the January winds were a bit bracing...

Summary:

“A visit in September and December says it all!”

This was our second visit in six months to The Goose Cotts at Dukes Farm. Ruth and Ken welcome guests and nothing is too much trouble. The cottage is a delight and our December visit meant we could play with the very efficient wood burner without feeling guilty!

The extras provided in kitchen and bathroom make such a difference to a short stay guest and the pure cotton bed linen and quality mattress ensure a comfortable night.

Ruth and Ken are happy to share their knowledge of the area - walks, flora and fauna and for us a newly re-opened pub - The Bridge at Michaelchurch Ecsley which was everything we could wish of a local with good food and friendly locals and only five minutes away from Dukes Farm.

We recommend the property to anyone who enjoys stunning country, walking, exploring the history of the area and the natural environment. Added to this on a wet day the attractions of Hay and Hereford are only a few miles away making Dukes Farm perfect at any time of the year. We are already planning a return visit!

Specifically Recommend:

The comfortable accommodation and the peace and solitude.

Lack of a mobile phone signal!

“Totally brilliant!”

Goose Cotts was just right for the two of us on a short break to re-charge batteries. It was super cosy, superbly appointed and equipped. We began great walks from our front door enjoyed stunning views of the Black Mountains, returning to light the woodburner and relax with a glass of red!

Market Day in Hay-on-Wye was our retail therapy. We found a good selection of shops not all books! We were impressed by the standard of art and crafts for sale and of course had to purchase.

Owners, Ruth and Ken, well what can I say, welcoming, friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. Ruth gave us great ideas of things to do which, as we were on a short break was really helpful in getting us started. We will be returning next year, this time for longer, as the area has much more to offer and we will be sure of a warm welcome.

“A gem of a holiday property”

We stayed at Dukes Farm for four nights and it was fantastic. The owners are so friendly and helpful and it is like staying with friends. We all had a great time, enjoying the simply wonderful views and peaceful surroundings.

It was great to find a place that was happy to take our dog and there is plenty of farmland to walk the dog on. All the local pubs were happy to allow you to bring your dog in with you as well.

The cottages are well stocked with all the provisions that you need, especially in the kitchen. There are also DVDs available to watch in the evening, if you so desire.

We would recommend Dukes Farm highly, and no doubt we will return.

“Beautiful properties with all home comforts and more besides”

We stayed in the Swallow Barn and the Granary and enjoyed a great weekend in beautiful cottages.

The owners have put a lot of thought into the conversion of the houses, and the result is simply stunning. They are kitted out with every conceivable piece of kitchen equipment you would need for a home away from home, and the bedrooms and bathrooms are beautiful.

The kids loved the well-stocked toy box and the garden and summerhouse were great for playing in. The trampoline and games room were an added bonus!

Highly recommended.

“Fantastic peaceful retreat far from the hassle of everyday life”

I rarely review anything, so Dukes Farm must have been special!

Where to start..... First of all IT IS A FARM, so bring some sensible footwear. We occupied twp properties at the farm, The Swallow Barn and The Granary. This was a family gathering to celebrate a 40th wedding anniversary and the Swallow Barn provided a superb focal point for us all to congregate and we did - often.

Catering was a dream, everything you could possibly want was there without asking - I couldn’t think of one thing that we didn’t find there and plenty of them too (crockery, cutlery, pans etc.). The bedrooms and bathrooms were very well fitted out, the beds comfortable and the overall decoration was to an excellent standard throughout. Very comfortable accommodation - the Swallow Barn for families in particular.

I could spend forever describing the stunning setting of the farm and the surrounding countryside but won’t. Suffice to say this was my first visit to this part of Wales but it certainly won’t be the last. The farm is situated on one side of a valley and the outlook from the rear verandah is fantastic, looking as it does at the Cats Back ridge opposite (which we got to the top of).

We did have one small criticism and only one - no bath in the Swallow Barn. All three bathrooms have showers and for anyone like us with smaller children who don’t like showers, this can prove a bit of a problem (but it certainly won’t stop us coming back).

Ruth and Ken are a wonderful, friendly pair and were always willing to chat and offer suggestions as to walks near and far, short or long, plus being a mine of other local and not-so-local information. They also have a veritable goldmine of literature regarding reachable places of interest - there’s something for everyone here. They have created a wonderful holiday environment in a beautiful place and deserve to have it fully booked all year round

Specifically Recommend:

Walks up Black Hill

Local Gems:

We spent most of our time out walking or visiting places of interest so evenings were largely spent in with a beer or two, but we did get a couple of meals at the 3 Tuns in Hay-on-Wye (recommended - very nice grub) and The Pandy Inn in Dorstone (reasonable food but got grossly overcharged and had to go back to rectify it).

“Dukes Farm ensures a luxurious and complete get-away-from-it-all venue, which would be difficult to beat”

Dukes Farm comprises three holiday cottages. We rented all three for a get-together to celebrate a special birthday and it couldn’t have worked better. The accommodation was superb with every detail considered in all three properties.

I was particularly impressed that the larger property (designed for eight people) could easily accommodate all 12 of us (and more, potentially) for meals and relaxing. Hence we enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner all together.

The separate Games Room was a big hit with children and adults alike. The table tennis, pool and table football were all enjoyed.

Ruth and Ken could not have been more helpful. Little touches included the constant topping up of the sweetie bowl by the sweetie fairy in the Boot Room, and the lending of ingredients for Sunday Lunch.

I’m sure everyone says it, but the views are expansive and fantastic from the Farm. I could go on and on ...... A big thank you to the Watkins Family

Specifically Recommend:

The sense of getting away from it all, but with complete luxury!

Local Gems:

We had a great horse riding morning at The Grange at Capel-y-Fin. The views on the ride were fabulous and it was essentially all off-road.

“The perfect place to relax and leave it all behind”

This was our second year staying in the Swallow Barn as a group and yet again the standard was excellent.

The barn is spacious and with its open plan lay out it is the perfect place for socialising. Sitting on the terrace with your cup of coffee looking at the fantastic view is the perfect way to start the day.

Yet again Ted (the Border Terrier) loved chasing around the garden although he draws the line at trampolining!

“Excellent”

We rented all three cottages for a 50th birthday celebration. We were able to cook big meals for a large party as the kitchen in Swallow Barn is really well stocked.

The views from there are lovely and there is a huge wood-burner so we were very cosy despite very cold weather outside.

The children enjoyed the trampoline and we all enjoyed the games room.

Hosts Ruth and Ken were really friendly and welcoming to all of us and very willing to help sort anything out. Great walking straight from the farm.

“Three comfortable, very well maintained cottages, perfect for a large group family visit. Will definitely re-visit”

We rented all three of the Dukes Farm cottages which worked perfectly for a group of couples, singles and families. The large cottage gave enough space for us to all eat and relax together, whilst having two other cottages meant anyone who wanted their own space could disappear off for a couple of hours.

All three cottages were very well maintained and also keeping that rustic feel. The setting of the cottages is beautiful, surrounded by fields. Lots of areas to walk and explore. The games room was an added bonus.

It is a good 30-40 minute drive from Hereford train station, so recommend to drive as it is very easy to find and access by car.

“Warm, friendly and very relaxing cottage in rural Herefordshire”

We made our way to Dukes Farm in order to have a relaxing long weekend over Easter and it didn’t disappoint.

Upon arriving we were given a very warm welcome from Ruth who explained where everything was, including the Boot Room which was crammed full of DVDs, board games and books (all of which can be taken back to your cottage and borrowed for as long as you require), and the Games Room complete with pool table and table tennis!

On top of that she gave us some excellent recommendations for places to visit and eat (we personally really enjoyed walking around Hay-on-Wye and for food we thought the Bull’s Head was very enjoyable).

The farm is completely open, so you can walk around where ever you please, there is even a fantastic hand-drawn map so you don’t get lost!

We stayed in the Goose Cotts cottage, even though we had a sneaky peek at the other two, and the standard of decoration and attention to detail is very good in all three cottages, the photographs on the website don’t do it justice.

In all, if you’re looking for a relaxing break in breathtaking scenery (if you really want amazing views, try scaling Cats Back Ridge) whilst staying in a friendly and very high quality cottage, you’ll struggle to find better than Dukes Farm Cottages.

“A haven of relaxation!”

This is our third year now to Dukes Farm and every time it doesn’t disappoint! Ruth and Ken have done a great job converting this previous working farm into a haven of relaxation.

There is everything you need in the cottages but if there is something you’ve forgotten or can’t find in your cottage, then Ruth and Ken are more than happy to help you out.

So if you want to be in the heart of the countryside (no mobile signal but Wi-Fi available in the boot room), with stunning views, comforting log fires and great walks then Dukes Farm is the place to be!

We have gone with our little boy and the dog and stayed in Goose Cotts which is a perfect size for us, but we are getting a group together to stay in one of the bigger cottages.

I would recommend the walks (details in your cottage of where to go) and a trip into Hay-on-Wye

“Chill, relax and we keep going back!”

What can I say..... The Dukes Farm experience just keeps getting better! This was our fourth visit and we can’t wait until we go back in August.

From the moment you arrive and are greeted by Ken and Ruth your stress levels drop. You find yourself just standing looking at the fantastic views of the Black Mountains and then you go into your accommodation and you’re gob-smacked again!

Every detail has been thought of from the welcome pack to every kitchen utensil you could possibly need. Everything is spotless and you don’t want for anything.

There’s family and child-friendly accommodation as well as being the perfect place for couples to escape to. We take our energetic Border Terrier (Ted) with us and in his own way I’m sure he would give it a 5 Paw Rating!

Summary:

“Far from the madding crowd - Dukes Farm is the height of luxury and comfort, in a special rustic and rural idyll”

It’s hard to describe exactly the feeling of being set apart from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to really unwind and relax! But that’s what happens to you from the minute you drive over the cattle grid at Dukes Farm and down into the lovely rustic olde worlde farmyard.

But instead of mud and tractor parts, one finds spring bulbs, the sound of running water and a lovely courtyard surrounded by three tastefully renovated barns. They adjoin each other and the family farmhouse, yet retain their individuality and privacy.

The whole place is understated, yet welcoming and comfortable, with all the modern conveniences you could possibly wish for along with lovely wood-burning stoves and an endless supply of logs.

We stayed in the wonderful Swallow Barn with its full height galleried and open plan living area it has full height windows looking out onto fields, the Monnow valley and the Cat’s Back ridge beyond - a wonderful view, whatever the weather.

The kitchen is very well equipped and there’s a very welcome pint of milk in the fridge and tea and biscuits to start you off. The beds are to die for with lovely thick duvets, the bathrooms have wonderful showers, with towels and toiletries - in fact, the whole place exudes understated luxury and comfort. Bliss!

Specifically Recommend:

The ground floor of the barn has an accessible bedroom and wet room with wide doorways and lots of space, ideal for people with mobility concerns, and the view each morning over the terrace to the ridge beyond is indescribable.

If you open the window all you can hear is birdsong and the bleat of distant sheep. Paradise for those who seek peace, quiet and relaxation.

Local Gems:

The farm at the bottom of the hill in Craswall is also a restaurant with take-away fish and chips on Thursday evenings, and the community shop at Longtown is a must - buy local produce and home-made crafts and make your shopping a pleasure rather than a chore!

En Route:

Brecon - lovely coffee shops and places to browse Hay-on-Wye has eateries and bookshops galore.

“A very enjoyable short break which we can’t wait to repeat”

Goose Cotts is a luxurious, comfortable and well equipped cottage in a very peaceful country location.

An idyllic spot to have a few days of rest, peace and quiet.

The owners are very friendly and welcoming to all their guests and make sure that every comfort is available.

A large supply of logs for the wood burning stove meant it was a lovely place to come back to at the end of the day.

Specifically Recommend:

Accommodation available for couples and families.

A very easy website to use for booking and full of information.

Summary:

“Great weekend, everyone really happy. If you are looking for a get-away-from-it-all break then this is the place for you! (or a quiet place to throw a party!!)”

I booked all the barns to celebrate my 40th Birthday with friends. The barns are all beautifully furnished and equipped.

Ruth and Ken are great hosts and if you want any extras or local knowledge they will do their best to provide it. They even found a local girl to waitress for us!, and she was brilliant.

We are now planning to get back in the summer to enjoy the views in warmer weather.

Specifically Recommend:

Lovely log burning fires with loads of logs provided.

Local Gems:

We didn’t really get out and about much.........far too comfortable in the barns!

The Bridge Inn had just been taken over, they aren’t serving food but the bar was open. It was quiet until us 12 turned up, but hopefully they will get the locals back in.

The Crown in Newtown was good for a drink.

En Route:

Stopped off at the Oak at Staplow, we had stayed here for a night before and the food was as good as we remembered, and you are allowed to take your dog in the bar.

Summary:

“Fantastic and definitely worth another visit”

I cannot recommend this place enough, the hosts are fantastic, very friendly and helpful. The barns are beautifully decorated and have everything you need within them.

The wood-burning stoves are amazing and perfect for curling up in front of after a lovely walk around the farm. The games room is a great addition as are the board games, DVDs and books that are provided.

The surrounding area is gorgeous and definitely worth exploring. This is a perfect place for a couple of days’ get away to recharge the batteries, a walking holiday or a get-together for a large group of friends.

The allowance of pets is fantastic and the barns are set up perfectly for muddy and wet dogs! A great holiday and definitely worth another visit!
