Summary:

“Cosy, away-from-it-all quiet, spacious cottage with great views, and excellent walks from the door”

What a find. This wonderfully reclaimed 17th-century cottage, thick-walled and warm, had plenty of space for four people, plus brilliant walks for us and the dog straight from the door, either into the delightful unspoiled market town of Barnard Castle (with its castle tipping precariously towards the river) or through woodland with a lively stream and loads of wild garlic.

Excellent walks further afield along the Teesdale Way or down the disused tracks of County Durham’s railway legacy.

Inside plenty of space to relax with a wonderful open fire (and stacks of generously supplied kindling and dry wood). Very quiet indeed - a long way from traffic - with lovely views over the ruin of Egglestone Abbey.

We have stayed in a number of cottages within easy reach of Durham (to see our daughter), but this is the best, and we’d go back like a shot.

Specifically Recommend:

The quiet, the dog-friendly location (with an enclosed garden), and the proximity of the delightful Barnard Castle with the wonderful baking at the Moody Baker.

We also really enjoyed a trip to Bishop Auckland’s revitalised Bishops palace.

Local Gems:

Moody Baker in Barnard Castle (delicious Guinness and black pudding sausage rolls, moreish cheese scones).

We visited a delightful caf, Pennys with an additional gluten-free menu.

En Route:

We came from Herefordshire - a long way - so only stopped briefly when necessary.
