Argoed Mill is a stone built Victorian converted mill enjoying a peaceful location in the beautiful upper Wye valley, overlooking the wheel race.

Ideal for two, the interior is described as spacious and unashamedly romantic. Original art on every wall, comfortable sofas, and a modern wood-burning stove. Argoed is advertised as a fine retreat for lovers, walkers, artists, fishermen and budding pool champions alike!

Kingfishers, dippers and otters may be seen from the balcony, pool can be played on your own pool table, organic veggies available from the kitchen garden and free range eggs from the resident hens.

The artist owners live just next door in the mill cottage, but you have plenty of space and your own private enclosed patio-garden, with seating and waterfall view. Wye Valley Walk just five mins drive, or walk through the fields. P.O & shop under a mile, River Wye for fishing, swimming etc just 100 yards!

  • Fully centrally heated plus woodburner
  • King size cast-iron type bed
  • Open plan living, kitchen, dining area
  • Den with pool table

  • Enclosed patio-garden with seating
  • Ample parking
  • Rhayader (cafes, shops, cycles) - 5 mile

Summary:

“A gem in the mid-Wales valley”

Excellent accommodation, very well equipped with lovely wood burner for the cold nights, and the pool table is a bonus!

The mill is on the main A470 but no traffic noise as the mill is set back from the road quite a way.

Only a ten minute drive to shops and pubs and tea shops in Rhayader - a lovely place.

We will certainly book again. The owners are very helpful and pleasant.

Specifically Recommend:

Highly recommend The Bell Country Inn at Llanyre - lovely food and the inn has been built to top spec.

Summary:

“Romantic place with beautiful decor in a great location, plus homemade cake, pool table and the most comfy bed ever - what more could you want”

The Under the Thatch website and Flickr showed plenty of photos in advance and when we arrived it was even lovelier than shown. On arrival we found that the owners had filled the place with fresh flowers and left us a fresh home-baked cake. The bed was so immensely comfortable that it was hard to get out of in the morning. In fact we ended up chucking out our creaky old bed when we got home and bought ourselves the exact same bed and mattress topper and similar snuggly flannelette bedding!!

The setting in mid-Wales is very beautiful, with views of the mountain, and the Mill grounds are very pretty. The accommodation has its own little garden with decked area by the stream at the front, beautifully kept and dotted with statues and complete with pretty little table and chairs. The owners keep chickens and doves, and have very friendly dogs. We woke in the morning to the sound of the doves cooing and the stream babbling along outside.

Inside the space was decorated in a pretty chic-yet-rustic fashion that was perfectly in keeping with the surroundings. Downstairs is a small utility area, a small and plain but functional bathroom, and a pool room. Upstairs is open plan, with lovely old floorboards and beams. The lounge area has slouchy sofas and wood burning stove.

The kitchen and dining area features the old mill doors to open and let the sunshine and fresh air as you eat at the little wooden table. The kitchen was well appointed though with fairly basic utensils etc - I seem to recall we didn’t find a tin-opener though so we bought one and left it as a present! Finally there is the bedroom area, with a beautiful and extremely comfy bed that was very hard to get out of and lovely views.

Specifically Recommend:

I would recommend this accommodation as amongst the prettiest we have ever stayed at - even my boyfriend was highly impressed and he rarely notices these things!

Be Aware:

The Mill itself is sited alongside a main road, but there is little noise even during the day and it makes getting out and about easier.

Local Gems:

Highlights.....
Canoeing down the river Wye from Glasbury then returning for lovely Italian food, coffee and wine at the River Cafe next door www.wyevalleycanoes.co.uk-cafe.htm

Visiting Hay-on-Wye for some great shopping and good restaurants

Heading further afield to St Fagan’s Museum of Welsh Life - what a fantastic place.
