“Perfect retreat to discover Exmoor”

What a revelation! We have stayed at a lot of cottages over the years and this one is probably the best for overall satisfaction.

Even though there is another adjoining property for rent, it is insulated by a narrow (useful) Laundry room that runs the complete width of the building between them so that you have complete privacy.

Also, the owners have gone to a lot of trouble to make guests feel welcome.

Specifically Recommend:

We recommend some of Fiona’s Cake - very tasty - and a leisurely look around the grounds of the Farm which is delightfully set out

Local Gems:

Dulverton is worth a visit, also a walk round Wimbleball Lake

Summary:

“Wonderful hosts, great cottage, amazing views - the perfect peaceful rural idyll”

The website for Weatherham Farm popped up after searching for a holiday rental in Exmoor and we just knew that it was worth a visit after reading the owners’ passionate description of their property and explanation of why they set up the business. Booking was really easy and the communications from Fiona and Steve were timely, friendly and very informative.

We were met on arrival and were delighted to receive such a warm welcome. Fiona provided all the information we could need about the property and surrounding area on the farm and then discreetly just left us alone to enjoy our time. We were also welcomed with some lovely cake to enjoy with our tea upon arrival! Parking is directly outside the cottage - so easy to load in and out and there is plenty of turning room.

Buzzards is a quaint one bedroom cottage attached to Toads Breech (a larger cottage also available for rental) and a stone’s throw away from the owners’ farmhouse. The properties are laid out in such a way that no-one overlooks any other and the sense of privacy is wonderful. The outlook is not only over the farmland but miles of unspoilt valley and rolling hills. It is very quiet -with just the sound of sheep, pheasant and the odd rutting deer. At night the dark skies are amazing with no light pollution aside from the huge moons.

Buzzards cottage offers you compact, cosy accommodation with a simple floor plan of open plan living area and kitchen downstairs and a large bedroom and separate shower room and toilet upstairs. It was spotlessly clean and decorated in a traditional style. The stairs aren’t as steep as some of the other old cottages we have stayed in so not too difficult if you aren’t quite as nimble as you used to be.

Despite a couple of very chilly nights, the central heating and GORGEOUS log burner makes it very toasty warm and ample logs were provided for our stay. The cottage has all the general cooking and eating utensils and equipment - comprehensive enough for all meals. Cleaning materials, soap and dishcloth etc were all there. Freeview TV and a very reasonable internet connection is provided - but mobile phone connection is pretty ropey across Exmoor as a whole - worth checking with your provided if it is important to you.

Seating is a couple of very comfy large armchairs and a separate table and chairs for eating at. The bedroom is quite large and the king-size bed comfortable. Bedding was spotlessly clean and of very good quality - we had no hesitation just snuggling down for the night. Shower was good (no bath) with plenty of very hot water day and night and lovely fluffy towels provided. Immediately outside the cottage there is a small patio area with wooden seating - lovely for enjoying the first cuppa in the morning. The owners very generously share the farm land and walking around to see the sheep and goats is wonderful. There is a large fairly secure fenced area for walking dogs and it has a bench to sit on and watch the sunrise and sunsets which are often breathtaking.

There are many great places to visit within relatively easy travelling distance of Weatherham and some nice places to eat out locally. The moor and the coast are both close to hand so there is something for everyone. Fiona and Steve are fabulous hosts offering lovely accommodation and the perfect balance of attention and seclusion to make this a wonderful place to stay. You would definitely need a week to make the most of the area and Weatherham Farm. We can’t wait to go back.

Specifically Recommend:

Make the most of the local walking. Enjoy the farm and the views. Make the most of owners knowledge.

Take in the local history - such as Dunster Castle and Village. Seek out the more beautiful and secluded beaches such as Kilve and Dunster.

Make a point of buying produce from local community shop and farm shops.

Make sure you have good walking gear and warm clothes for evening outings!

Local Gems:

Dunster Castle and Village

Pubs in Dulverton

Community shop in Brompton Regis

Dunster Beach

Kilve Beach

“A place to relax in the company of excellent hosts ”

We chanced upon Buzzards at Weatherham Farm quite by accident through an internet search, but from the very first contact we were enchanted with the place. Fiona and Steve were very helpful during our initial enquiries about availability, and they turned out to be just as charming in real life as they were on the phone & email. The farm is in a lovely spot just outside Brompton Regis, and the peace and tranquillity are just stunning. The night skies were beautifully clear while the only sound we heard after dark was the occasional hoot of an owl in nearby woods.

The cottage itself is nicely appointed, the bed comfortable and cooking and bathroom facilities very pleasant. The woodburner stove with a plentiful supply of logs is a nice extra touch for those evenings when you decide to stay in and need a bit of extra snugness. The cottage is very dog-friendly, and in fact our dog was welcomed wherever we went around Exmoor in pubs and restaurants alike. The walking highlights were Tarr Steps and Haddon Hill, though Spaniel owners might like to know that the area is alive with pheasant poults in Autumn. Very tempting for gundog breeds!

Specifically Recommend:

Walking by the River Barle

Local shopping for food in Dulverton

Enjoying profound peace and quiet

Local Gems:

The Tarr Farm Inn at Tarr Steps serves exceptionally good food

The George, the local at Brompton Regis, is easily walkable if you prefer to leave your car behind.

“It is easier to get out of Exmoor than to get Exmoor out of you”

When we arrived we were very surprised by the fact that it was such a clean, neat but also cosy cottage, surrounded by trees, fields, sheep, a few chickens and goats. The kitchen was well equipped.

We had beautiful views and nice walks. The place itself was quiet and peaceful.

There was a really good pub in the village and also a village shop. Our hosts had arranged a table for us in the pub, so we just had to pop in for dinner.

The place suits for couples and dog owners and is a good base for people who likes to walk.

Weatherham Farm is wonderful. Fiona and Steve are brilliant hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them. If you need to chill out this is the place to stay and the cottages are very cosy, well equipped and the views are lovely. This was our second stay there and was just as enjoyable as our first.

The special attention to detail in the cottages made our stay an enjoyable experience and we didn’t want to leave. Hope to see you again soon!!!!! Thank you.

Summary:

“A relaxing and peaceful retreat!”

We wanted a relaxing, peaceful place for our summer break. The Buzzards is very clean and lovely rusticly furnished with all you need for a self catering cottage.

The place is tucked away in its own grounds with green, sunny yards. From time to time we saw the farm’s few goats looking at us over the fence. Their bells reminded us of a forgotten quiet place where the daily noise cannot reach.

The owners made us welcome, they are very friendly and we were pleased to be offered delicious homemade cakes when we got in.

We definitely recommend this place for a peaceful break! It is more than we expected.

Specifically Recommend:

We enjoyed the peaceful, green surrounding farms fields and the lovely woodburner fire.

Local Gems:

The area is suitable for walking. There are many very pleasant walking routes visiting Dunster Village with its beautiful castle and also short drives to the beach towns.

The pubs offer food which is very good and fresh, provided by local farmers.

En Route:

The Dunkery Beacon is definitely one of the places to visit and walk to for a fresh air and view. There are many places around there you are able to stop, sit, have a picnic and admire the panorama.

On our way to Lynmouth, we stopped to take some photos where from we admired the Welsh coast over the Bristol Channel.
