Summary:

“Get away from the cities and the towns, enjoy the countryside and all there is to offer, get away from it all and relax in beautiful surroundings..... ”

The accommodation was lovely. A nice country feel to the place. As we were late arriving, when we got there, the fire was lit, the cottage was warm, and there was a bottle of wine waiting in the fridge. It has a homely, cosy feeling. A home away from home.

Certainly exceeded our expectations...you never know what a place will be like until you get there, but then we didn’t want to leave. We loved it. We have been twice now and we will definitely go back again.

Mark and Pat, the owners, are a lovely couple and warmly welcome you upon arrival. The cottages are nicely decorated and very comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped, the sofas are comfortable and when the log fire is burning, you can curl up and enjoy the warmth.

The surrounding area is fantastic. There is a local pub within walking distance, that serves lovely food. There are also a few pubs within a short drive which are very nice too

Specifically Recommend:

Mark & Pat have put together a folder of things to do, near and far. The last time we stayed, we did their Grand Drive Out. This was great. It took a day and we took in a lot of sights and places we would never have seen. There are also a lot of country walks, which are very relaxing.

Be Aware:

Enjoy the views for as long as you can.....
Ever wondered what it’s like to see the sky at night without light pollution... Visit here, and on your walk back from the local pub, after a hugely filling dinner, look up and enjoy.

Local Gems:

There is a local pub within walking distance, but there are a couple of pubs that Mark & Pat have put in the folder that are definitely worth checking out.

Summary:

“A very relaxing stay - nothing to worry about and everything to enjoy”

The Barn is warm, comfortable and extremely well equipped - better than my own kitchen in some respects! We stayed for Bank Holiday weekend with our two children and dog - two of our good friends were also staying in Helm Cottage with their two dogs.

The whole group ate meals in The Barn - more than enough pans, crockery, cutlery etc to accommodate us and a simply enormous dishwasher to deal with the debris afterwards!

Gamblesby itself is very quiet and peaceful - totally safe for children and dogs - and ideally located for a 3 mile uphill walk to the cafe for one of the best brunch breakfasts in Cumbria - ask for the ’homemade toast’!

There is a huge array of information in the cottages with leaflets about any activity you could want - and Mark and Pat are always on hand to deal with any extra requests, offering to look things up on the internet if need be and to give their own recommendations, or pass on those of previous guests.

Specifically Recommend:

We arrived quite late on a chilly Spring night and Pat had been into the Barn to light the wood burning stove - it was so warm and welcoming when we arrived.

That, alongside the complimentary bottle of wine left in the fridge for us, was just about the perfect welcome on a Friday night after a long journey up the M6!

Local Gems:

Recommend the Pencil Museum in Keswick - our two girls (aged 5 and 9) absolutely loved it on a rainy Bank Holiday Monday - kept them entertained for ages!

En Route:

Tebay Services is probably one of the best ones on the M6.

The wholefood cafe in Keswick is also excellent - the Lakeland Pedlar.
