Summary:

“The Hill Cottage - beautiful surroundings and excellent food.”

The Hill Cottage looked beautiful on their website and it didn’t disappoint!! Set in very quiet and peaceful surroundings in a huge garden and only three miles from Stratford, this B&B is ideally situated to explore Shakespeare country, including Oxford, Moreton-in-Marsh and The Slaughters further afield.

Directions from the owners were very clear (even to which entrance we should use for ease of exit). My friend and I had booked a twin-bedded room which had a double aspect, giving the room lots of natural light and the furnishings were modern, clean and welcoming. Coffee and tea-making facilities were available together with the little extras of some delicious biscuits and lemon drops and it was no trouble for the owners to supply more milk etc on request. Some light reading was provided which included Pride and Prejudice together with local area interest including art and customs.

The beds were comfortable and even though the bathroom was a walk across the hall, we didn’t happen to meet other guests! Work has been done to extend guest areas downstairs and the lounge area, which we didn’t have time to use much, was decorated beautifully with Gothic themes to the light oak furniture.

Breakfast was delicious on both mornings with plenty of food to set us up for the day. The only minor observations were that we didn’t have a wardrobe to hang trousers etc and the bathroom could do with a re-fresh, which the owners pointed out when we were being shown around.

Specifically Recommend:

The area is packed with things to do and we especially enjoyed the hop on-hop off open top bus tour which took us all over Stratford.

Walks along the river are lovely and there’s always the RSC theatre if it rains!!

Be Aware:

Potential guests should be aware that there is a very steep and winding staircase to the rooms which could not be by people with mobility issues and there are a number of steps all around the property which have to be negotiated to access bedrooms and breakfast room.

Local Gems:

Shakespeare’s birthplace and his daughter’s house in the town centre are well worth a visit if you’re into literature, architecture and history.

Anne Hathaway’s cottage is a delight for gardeners at any time of the year.

En Route:

We didn’t stop en-route but there’s any number of pubs, B&Bs etc in the area
