Summary:

“A luxurious stay in a unique place, full of character - not just another Cotswold’s cottage”

The Old Chapel is just what it says - a converted church, with a small, pretty graveyard, on the slopes of the Slad valley. The interior is most unlike other places we’ve stayed in the Cotswolds - not all flowery and antiques, but a mix of stylish contemporary furnishings with original church doors and windows.

It is finished to a very high standard - furniture, art, kitchen equipment, beds, towels etc. Was spotlessly clean and tidy. The views have to be seen to be believed.

There were two TVs and DVDs, an open fire, spacious downstairs sitting room with choice of sofas (but with a separate kids’ den with video games and beanbags) and very comfortable bedrooms.

It’s a big house - there were eight of us and at no point did it feel crowded. The village of Slad is pretty, with a wonderful pub (the Woolpack) where we had a very good lunch. The countryside is beautiful - we even saw a pair of deer in the meadow behind the Chapel.

Could Provide.....
A little more sunshine would have been nice! Otherwise it was a truly fantastic stay.

Specifically Recommend:

It’s a great place for a family get-together - big, comfortable and ideal for eating together. There are no fussy antiques for the kids to break, and it’s very easy on the eye.

If you enjoy cooking, the Chapel’s kitchen is very well equipped, with the latest ovens, hob, and huge American style fridge. There is every kind of utensil, pan and crockery and the owners provide herbs, condiments, cooking oils etc which saves having to bring it all with you. The dining table is a huge refectory table with church pews on two sides - wonderful for a dinner party.

Be Aware:

We would not recommend disabled or unfit people staying here, as the house itself is up a 20 metre steep slope, or 20 steps, and Slad Valley is very steep so all the walks in the area require quite a level of fitness!

Local Gems:

The Woolpack pub, Slad - charming.
St Michael’s restaurant, Painswick - delicious
Painswick Rococo Gardens - beautiful
Stroud Saturday Farmers’ market - very impressive
